Over 150 area youth took part in a Laser Maker Baseball Clinic. The players ages 7-14, learned proper fielding fundamentals and throwing mechanics while performing under the watchful eye of at least 18 instructors, including Steve Winfield, the brother of Dave Winfield, a long-time professional player who was a multi-sport athlete for the Minnesota Gophers. The clinic also included contests of skill for prizes, an autograph session, and visits by the Saint Paul Saints and Alexandria Beetles mascots. Following the free clinic, a showcase for older players was held, giving them a chance to receive a professional evaluation from Cleveland Indians scout Phil Nicoletti and Wes Hazlett, the Coordinator for LMBC. It was quite the sight for me to see all the young players when I ventured out to the Northside Rec Area Monday morning. Young players were lined up in the infield and outfield of at least four of the ball fields, and the instructors were busy leading drills and teaching fundamentals. While journeying around the fields taking pictures, I was impressed with the instructors and overall organization of the clinic. Some players were learning the correct mechanics of throwing, while others were learning how to catch fly balls, handle grounders and the correct way to pivot and throw. Everything was broken down into simple steps, and the instructors took the time to make sure all the young players knew exactly what was expected before having a chance to practice the skills. Later, the youth learned proper batting skills, base running fundamentals, game strategies and more. I thought back to when my sons were younger, and wished they would have had the opportunity for some sort of clinic like this. All in all, it was a great clinic and all the people in charge of setting up and helping out with the clinic should be commended.
